How do I keep my teeth clean while in braces?

Proper oral hygiene is critical while you are in orthodontic treatment. You should brush your teeth after every meal and floss at least once a day. If you are having trouble cleaning around brackets and wires, please let us know. Special orthodontic tools are available and we are happy to help you choose the right products for your teeth and appliance. The dangers of poor oral hygiene are cavities and white spots on the teeth. Clean teeth are a must!

Are there any foods I cannot eat?

Yes, we recommend avoiding sticky foods like caramel, Starburst, and gum that get caught between the brackets and wires. You should also avoid hard foods like popcorn, nuts, and pizza crust because they can break or damage wire and brackets. Minimize sugary foods like ice cream, soda, and candy which can cause tooth decay and related problems.

Will braces hurt?

It is normal to have mild soreness right after you get braces and after regular adjustment appointments. We recommend sticking to soft foods for the first couple of days. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help too.

What should I do if I have a loose bracket?

If a bracket becomes loose or breaks off, please contact our office promptly so we can fix it. Broken brackets can cause delays in treatment. Please do not wait until your next scheduled appointment to let us know.

What should I do if I have a poking wire?

You may be able to move the wire away from the irritated area with a cotton swab or pencil eraser. If the wire will not move, you can use dental wax provided by our office to cover the end of it. You may also clip the end of the wire with nail clippers or scissors that have been sterilized in alcohol. If you cannot resolve the problem, please contact our office.

Will I get a retainer?

Yes. The bone around your teeth is constantly growing and changing, which means your teeth could shift after your braces are removed. Wearing retainers helps keep your teeth in an ideal position. You’ve worked hard for your beautiful smile, so be sure to wear your retainer to maintain your results!
